AVV ( Alternatief voor Vakbond : Alternative for Labour Union) is a newly established labour union in the Netherlands. This labour union stands for the needs of young workers, independent workers (freelancers) and European workers in the Netherlands. AVV wants to be a counterpart and a counterforce in the decision-making processes in the Netherlands.
The problem for the younger or independent workers
Like many other countries in Europe, socio-economic affairs are dominated by labour unions that mainly represent the interests of older, white males with a fixed contract. The outcome of many decisions favours employees with fixed contracts and pension burdens are shifted to the younger workers. Laws and institutions tend not to take into account that many people work for themselves, as independent workers. The agenda of the existing labour unions is not geared towards the future, but to protecting the rights of their members.
